This site is put together by local people who know the area around Crickhowell in Powys well.
The Black Mountains lie to the east of the Brecon Beacons and north of the small town of Crickhowell. They are nothing short of beautiful. Once up on the tops, the views are stunning and the rest of the world could be thousands of miles away.
This site offers information about specific walks, including getting to the start and points on the route to look out for. The illustrations include a description of the route, compass bearings and grid references. There are also links to the Ordnanace Survey's website so that you can order the relevant map for the walk.
Enjoy the images taken on different walks around the Black Mountains. They will hopefully whet your appetite to get out there and enjoy the fresh air and scenery.
It is very important not to go out on to the hills unprepared. The weather can change rapidly and when the clouds come down on to the tops you can get into real trouble. In those situations you need to be able to read a map acurately and use a compass confidently. You will also need the right kind of clothing and footware.
You will find a range of useful links to sources of information about local accomodation and transport.
The walks described in this web site follow a similar format: A six figure grid reference is given for the start of the walk and any other important or notable parts of the walk.
The starting point is described and the grid ref. given. An estimate of the length of the walk in miles and the time necessary to complete the walk is given.
The degree of challenge the walk offers to walkers
is also made clear. The assumption is made that all walkers will be reasonably fit and agile enough to negotiate the numerous styles that almost all the walks feature.

There are several relevant books available which describe walks further afield in south Wales and beyond. Follow the links to Amazon and have a look. Go to the Useful Info page for direct links.
